Do You Have a Lot of Heat in Your Body?



While 98.6˚F is the normal temperature of the human body, slight variations on the higher or lower side are acceptable. However, if your body temperature is outside the normal range, you need to try to correct it. It is essential that your body is the right temperature for it to function properly. High body heat can cause sleeplessness, irritation in the eyes and stomach, and several other unpleasant symptoms.


Nidhi Dhawan, HOD of Dietetics at Saroj Super Speciality Hospital says, “You can control this yourself by changing your food habits and consuming foods that can help you keep your body temperature regulated.” She goes on to explain what causes your body to produce excess heat, how it can be detected, and some practical tips and foods and beverages that can help alleviate it.


What causes your body to produce excess heat?

• Diseases, fever and neurological disorders.

• Abnormal thyroid activity, which causes an increase in metabolism and therefore leads to excess heat production.

• Prolonged exposure to the sun.

• Hot and humid weather.


Symptoms of excess heat in the body:

• Stomach ulcers

• Burning hands and feet

• Rapid heartbeat

• Heat cramps

• Burning sensation in the eyes

• Skin rashes and boils

• Excessive perspiration

• Acidity and heartburn




Practical tips to control the heat

You can try rubbing sandalwood on your body to lower its temperature. Adding some drops of rose water to the sandalwood can enhance its effect. You can also soak your feet in a basin of cold water. This will reduce your body temperature too.


Foods and beverages to regulate your body heat

• Coconut water: It hydrates your body and balances your electrolytes naturally. It also regulates body temperature instantly.

• Watermelons: Juicy fruits like watermelon have a very high water content, which regulates the heat in your body.

• Buttermilk: Buttermilk supplies you with essential probiotic vitamins and minerals that can get depleted through dehydration.

• Apricot juice: Drinking a glass of apricot juice with honey in it will not only quench your thirst, it will also cool you down.

• Peaches: Peaches, both dried and fresh, keep your skin hydrated and make it glow. They are also a great source of Vitamins A and B2.

• Cardamom: Apart from flavouring food, green cardamom also works as a powerful remedy to reduce body heat.

• Milk: Drinking a cold glass of milk with honey can help bring down your body temperature.

• Other foods: Other foods like sugarcane juice, cucumbers, citrus fruit juices, bananas, herbal teas, barley and mint also reduce body heat considerably.
